Building on a strong jazz background developed by their parents, the Afrida Marimba Band have been playing together for close on a decade. Performing and playing in their hometown, Soweto, the band have played at numerous promotional events and parties including the 88th birthday of Walter Susulu. Drawing on many influences including Afro Jazz, Kwela and Mbaqanga, their unique Marimba style first reached the attention of the music world when they won the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters award. They picked up awards for best Afro Jazz Band, including the award for best composition and a merit award for vocalist and marimba player Mpumi Nhlapi.
Their hectic schedule includes performances at various private functions, markets, and the many jazz clubs in and around Johannesburg. Their compositions reflect the various styles of African music, using both the traditional sounds of the marimbas combined with beautiful touching lyrics and harmonies. Their infectious rhythms have been heard echoing through the many African market places and community halls. Old meets new as the ancient sounds of Africa are fused with instruments and songs of the modern world.
